What to Expect Before, During, and After Dental Implant Surgery

Dental Implants Bethlehem, PAAt Gentle Family Dentistry and Implant Center, patients in the communities of Bethlehem and Allentown, PA can seek dental implant procedures with our team. Drs. Riyaz K. Gangji, Efraim Ramirez Lugo, and Sandip Ladani are available to assist, and may work with patients to help them understand what to expect before, during, and after their dental implant surgery.

Before

First, patients need to determine if they are a proper candidate for dental implants. This is done during an initial evaluation and consultation which may include dental x-rays to see if there is enough bone density for successful placement. A dental appointment is made for the placement of the implant itself.

During

During the appointment, the dentist will provide sufficient anesthetics and sedation to ensure patient comfort. This is discuss before the surgical treatment to decide which sedation method is appropriate. Patients may be told to avoid taking certain medications the day of the procedure or for a week or two beforehand, so be honest with your dentist about your medical history. The procedure is often done quickly in the office under sedation and anesthetic during which the implant is placed into the bone and the gum tissue is stitched for healing.

After

After the procedure, patients will return home with the help of a friend or family member. Patients are given after-care instructions regarding the care the area may need. These instructions should be followed closely as they help ensure a successful procedure and can greatly reduce the risk of infection. As the area heals, patients may be required to come back into the dental office for a follow-up appointment to check the area. At this second appointment, a restoration may be placed over the implant to finish the process. This restoration may be a dental crown, dental bridge, or a full denture for implant-retained dentures.
