The importance of flossing

It’s no secret that flossing your teeth is important for oral health, but many patients still don’t do it regularly. Why? Well, there are a few reasons. For one, flossing can be time-consuming and difficult to fit into a busy schedule. And let’s be honest, it’s not the most pleasant activity in the world. But despite all of that, flossing is essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Here’s why:

  • Flossing removes both plaque and bacteria from between the teeth and along your gum line. Plaque is a sticky film of saliva, bacteria, and food debris. If it is not removed, it will harden into what is known as tartar, which can lead to gum disease. Gum disease is an infection of the gums that can cause tooth loss.
  • Flossing also stimulates the gums and blood flow, which helps to keep them healthy. When done correctly, it shouldn’t cause the gum tissues to bleed or swell. This is a sign of healthy gums. Bleeding or swelling may be a sign of conditions such as periodontal disease which should be evaluated by a professional.
  • Flossing simply feels good! A clean mouth always feels fresher and cleaner than one that’s full of plaque and bacteria. It can also be used to eliminate or reduce the likelihood of bad breath, which is often caused by food trapped between the teeth and poor oral hygiene.

These are just a few of the many reasons why flossing is so important for oral health. So make sure to add it to your daily routine and your teeth and gums will thank you for it!
